Unlike the “CocaCola” Marangu Route, the Machame Route is the “whiskey” of trails – bold, scenic, and full of character. You’ll be amazed at every turn as you make your way through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the mountain.

But this climb is not just about the scenery, it’s also about the challenge. With the Machame Route, you’ll be able to test your physical fitness and hiking skills while having the time of your life. Day-by-Day Itinerary Description

Itinerary Plan

Day 1: Trek from Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • On arrival finalize the climb formalities including registrations and with your professional Mountain Guide Porters and Cook start the climb up to Machame camp for meals and overnight stay.
  • Elevation: 1,640 meters (5,380 feet) to 2,835 meters (9,350 feet)
  • Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • On arrival at Shira camp you will have Lunch and thereafter and if the weather permits the Guide will take you for the Tour of Shira Plateau on the western breach which commands the most beautiful scenery. Dinner and overnight stay at Shira camp.
  • Elevation: 2,835 meters (9,350 feet) to 3,845 meters (12,500 feet)
  • Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

After breakfast continue with the trek via Lava Tower upto Baranco hut for meals and overnight stay.

  • Elevation: 3,845 meters (12,500 feet) to 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) then down to 3,960 meters (13,044 feet)
  • Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-Desert

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Afternoon a walk can be taken with your guides for great views of the Southern walls of Kibo and deep glacial valleys. Overnight at Karranga Valley

  • Elevation: 3,960 meters (13,044 feet) to 4,035 meters (13,106 feet)
  • Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

This is one of the most demanding sections of the climb crossing the Barranco Walls up to Karanga Valley. At times you may need to use your hands to support yourself scrambling on the bare Lava Rocks. Picnic Lunch at Karanga Valley and thereafter continue with the climb up to Barafu hut. On arrival take meals and a chance to relax as the next stage begins immediately after midnight.

  • Elevation: 4,035 meters (13,106 feet) to 4,640 meters (15,223 feet)
  • Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

In the early hours of the morning with your Professional Mountain Guides, you will start the final climb to the summit. On arrival at Uhuru Peak, you will take Pictures and thereafter you will descend down to Barafu hut for breakfast and then continue descending down to Mweka hut for meals and overnight stay.

  • Elevation: 4,640 meters (15,223 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) then down to 3,100 meters (10,170 feet)
  • Distance: 5 km (3 miles) ascent, 12 km (7 miles) descent
  • Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

where you will be awarded with Victory Certificates for reaching the summit the highest point in Africa Uhuru Peak. Thereafter the driver will drive you back to Hotel for your next destination.

  • Elevation: 3,100 meters (10,170 feet) to 1,640 meters (5,380 feet)
  • Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest
